Reflux 101 What Actually Worked
I have to admit I am somewhat of a research nerd when it comes to Adelaide. I hop online to read about products, medicines, how to's, etc. I learned this annoying, but useful habit from Scott. Here is the outcome:
Adelaide has "silent reflux" which is more dangerous then normal reflux. Silent Reflux is where infants choke on, or regurgitate their spit up, so you end up having to watch them constantly. It is also more painful because the acid comes up then back down, making the throat burn twice as bad. You can imagine how hard it's been on us. Within the first month of life she has been to 3 different pediatricians, a chiropractor, homeopathic Dr, and reflexologist. Not all of them helped, but desperate times call for desperate measures! Here are the things that actually helped her.
1- Lots of prayers from our supportive families
2-The reflexologist! I thought the voodoo she did on Adelaide's feet was interesting, but it worked a miracle. She has improved a great deal. Adelaide will now sleep on her back peacefully without constant reflux. It is so awesome! She still has some reflux episodes, but the improvement is obvious. I am grateful my cousin informed me about her.
3-The 14 steps to take for an GERD baby online -Positioning makes a difference and how Adelaide latches when nursing.
4-I have been watching what I eat very closely (I'm not willing to test this yet, so I am currently avoiding a lot of foods I really like)
5-The Rock and Play bed by Fisher Price- great spine support and angled (The AR pillow looked great too, but we decided this fit our needs better)
6-Cuddling her on my chest skin on skin really calms her down
7-Taking her off Zantac. I took her off the medicine after the foot magic so perhaps that is why she does so much better off it. It also could be the nasty flavor?
Also, one of the pediatricians claimed that a 1/2 ounce of chamomile tea calms a lot of babies tummies and has no known side effects. I haven't tested this out yet.
Personal Opinion: After Adelaide was prescribed Reglan I did a lot of research about it and ended up getting a second Dr. opinion. I was glad I did because in her case I don't think the problem was worth the risk. I would try Zantac and Prevacid before using Reglan on an infant. My nephew was on it for along time and turned out great, but it does have a risky profile. The last Pediatrician I went to said that if all other medications weren't working, she would send a baby to a GI specialist and let them further investigate and prescribe, but she would never prescribe Reglan herself. It's all opinions, but worth knowing both sides to each medication.
Hope this helps someone out there.
